about our my Maine school visits
"How is Maine special to you?"
Students will be encouraged to think about what they love about living in Maine (or their state), and how it is special to them. Just as the main character does in the opening page of the book, students are asked to bring to class a small item that represents Maine and is special to them (i.e. sea glass, pinecone, photograph of their favorite place in Maine, etc.). Author Suzanne Buzby Hersey will share all of the “show and tell” items from the book and do a reading of My Maine. She will then invite the students to share their items that they feel represent Maine.
Next, students are invited to make a classroom book that expresses their love of Maine, using the share item to prompt their writing. The level of the writing exercise is based on the session's grade/age level.
After the writing portion of the program is completed, students are asked to trade papers with a friend, so that they can illustrate each other’s work. Suzanne explains to the students that most authors do not illustrate their own books, and that an illustrator creates the artwork to accompany the story (this exercise works best for grades 2-4).
While the students are busy with their book pages, Suzanne is available to work individually with the children. If time allows, she will end the session by meeting in a circle, and allowing the children to share their completed work with the rest of the class. Some classrooms choose instead to end the session with a brief Q&A.
Suzanne is also available to sign copies of My Maine for those students who wish to purchase a copy. Pre-order forms are available soon for free download (this is the preferred sales method).
